Planet OS is a geospatial, energy-focused data infrastructure and intelligence company, based in Silicon Valley, with strong Estonian roots. Planet OS provides powerful cloud-based data solutions, geospatial infrastructure and intelligence. Geospatial IoT products include a Powerboard for the energy industry, data publishing for governments, and data access for everyone.
Planet OS was founded in 2012 by Rainer Sternfeld, Kalle Kägi and André Karpištšenko. Rainer Sternfeld has led business development at ABB Baltic States and supervised IT, ERP and OPEX units, and brings knowledge from engineering design. Kalle Kägi is also the co-chair of WOC Smart Ocean/Smart Industries Working Group at the World Ocean Council and co-founded a design engineering company. André Karpištšenko founded the Data Research Team of Skype and has previously developed early versions of Eionet Systems for the European Environmental Agency.
Previously known as Marinexplore, Planet OS enables the discovery and access to high quality weather and climate data from the world’s premiere data providers using a single, consistent API. Their Powerboard interactive analysis tool combines real-time operational, industrial and commercial data from data providers into a single cloud-based solution.
This means that users can just get hold of the information they actually need, without having to download the entire dataset. Planet OS API users are able to access three global forecast models: NOAA WaveWatch III, NCEP Global Forecast System and HYCOM Global Ocean Forecast.
Planet OS signed a contract with one of Europe’s largest energy companies, RWE, so this startup’s software will be monitoring RWE’s numerous wind and solar parks around the world. In 2015, Planet OS received the Estonian American Innovation Award.
